Suzuki Ecstar rider appears in Q2 for the first time at the Malaysian Grand Prix and will start from eighth position on the grid.

The Malaysian heat produced difficult conditions at Sepang on Saturday, but Álex Rins enjoyed his best day of qualifying of the season, obtaining the best time in Q1 to access Q2. In the decisive qualifying session, Rins finished eighth, putting him on the third row of the grid for the Malaysian Grand Prix.

A dry FP3 session in the morning allowed Rins to take an important step forward with the setup of his Suzuki GSX-RR, although he did not qualify directly for Q2 after finishing 11th. However, in Q1 he immediately went fast, ending the session with the best time. Once in Q2, the Spaniard managed to clock a 1:59.992 that led him to him taking eighth place.

Álex Rins

“It’s been a bit tough in all the sessions because the heat is incredible on the track. I’ve had some difficulties, but I’m really happy because at the beginning we struggled until FP3. During FP4 I worked only on getting a good pace, and I succeeded. I was trying to push to the limit to get into Q2. Finally we achieved it and I am happy because it is my best result of the season. We will have to wait to see what conditions we have tomorrow.”
